This course is intended for students who wish to refine their speaking, writing, and reading skills beyond the intermediate level. Designed as a comprehensive introduction to modern German culture, we will discuss a variety of literary, political, and philosophical texts, including feature films and video materials. In addition, students have the opportunity to enrich the curriculum, by giving class reports on current events of their choice. Weekly grammar reviews will complement these activities.

The first half of the course is devoted to readings from the breadth of Karl Marx's works, from his earliest manuscripts to Capital. The second half of the course will focus on representatives of "Western Marxism" -- Adorno, Horkheimer, Gramsci, Althusser, Benjamin and others. (Taught in English with an extra session in German)

H 224 01 THE CHILD IN GERMAN LITERATURE TETTLEBAUM MW 12:30-2

An introduction to cinema from its inception until the outbreak of World War II. This course combines an introduction to cinema history, focusing on the national cinemas of Germany, France, Russia/Soviet Union and the United States, with an introduction to the analysis and interpretation of film and important concepts in film theory. We will see films by Edison, Porter, Griffith, Chaplin, Keaton, Murnau, Lang, Wiene, Dali, Bunuel, Renoir, Clair, Eisenstein, Vertov, Pudovkin, and others. No prior film experience required. (Taught in English)

This course will explore the rich and diverse representations of music in all its socio-aesthetic complexity from antiquity to the present. The thematic scope of our investigations shall range from mythological, philosophical, theological, and semiotic questions, through issues of gender, race, and politics, to theories of media, operatic performance, and psychoanalytical implications of the acoustic/auditory sphere. (Taught in English with an extra session in German)
