Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why should I make a gift to Haverford?

In order for our community to thrive, each member must participate in sustaining and building it. Haverford's alumni body is smaller than many schools (1/3 smaller than Swarthmore and half the size of Williams), so we need more people to give in order to meet the College's financial needs. Making a gift to Haverford's Annual Fund–in any amount–is one of the most important ways young alumni can do that.

  • I just gave this past spring, why am I being asked to give again?

Haverford's fiscal year cycle runs from July 1-June 30. Once you’ve made your Annual Fund gift, you are removed from solicitations for the duration of the fiscal year. By making a gift early in the fiscal year (cough, October’s Young Alumni Giving Month, cough), you won’t be asked to give again until fall 2015!

  • I can only give a small amount. Why should I bother?

Because your gift, no matter the size, is like voting on Election Day. Your single vote may seem insignificant, but it's the collective votes that make a difference. When everyone participates in giving to the Annual Fund, it's like a collective vote of support for Haverford. And, all gifts combined add up to thousands of dollars that we use to keep the College running.

Additionally, a family from the Class of 2011 will match your gift, making the act of giving even more meaningful, because it leverages additional vital revenue for the College.

  • What will my gift be used for?

All gifts received during YAGM go to Haverford's Annual Fund, which provides current-year operating support for the College. You may direct your Annual Fund gift to the specific area of the Haverford experience that you value most:

    • Academic Enrichment
    • Financial Aid
    • Campus and Facilities
    • Student Life
    • Athletics
    • Greatest Need (Unrestricted)
  • Will the matching gift count toward my class’s gift total or my membership in The 1833 Society?

No. Only your original gift, before the match, is credited for these purposes. However, if your employer has a matching gift program, their match will count toward your class’s total and your membership to The 1833 Society.

  • If I make a pledge and promise to pay it by the end of the fiscal year on June 30, can I still receive the matching dollars?

A one-time payment pledge made during Young Alumni Giving Month will not be matched unless the actual payment of the gift is made by October 31, 2014. However, if you enroll in the Recurring Gift Program, the sum of your monthly donations through June 30, 2015 will be matched.

  • If I already made my Annual Fund gift for this fiscal year, will it be matched?

Yes. All gifts made between July 1 and October 31, 2014 qualify for the match.

  • How do I make my gift?

You can make your gift online or 1-866-GIFT4HC. If you wish to send us a check*, please make it payable to Haverford College and mail it to:

    Institutional Advancement

*Checks postmarked by October 31, 2014 count toward YAGM and will be matched accordingly.

    Please contact or 1-866-GIFT-4HC.

  • What if I set up a recurring gift?

If you’d like to make a larger contribution, consider breaking up your gift into monthly payments. When you enroll in the Recurring Gift Program during October, the sum of your monthly gifts (through June 30, 2014) will be matched 1:1. For example, if you sign up for a recurring gift of $20 per month, your total by June 30 will be $180, earning a $180 match. That’s $360 for Haverford for only $20/month!
