Thomas Lloyd
Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral and Vocal Studies
Biography
Thomas Lloyd has directed the combined choral and vocal studies program for Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges since 1996. He has also served as Artistic Director of the Bucks County Choral Society since 2000. Lloyd is also Director of Music at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. He was recently the only choral conductor in a list of area arts leaders named as a “Creative Connector” by Leadership Philadelphia, a program of WHYY and the Knight Foundation, for his extensive work in arranging collaborative performances with artists both in the region and around the world. He is also an active composer, whose concert-length choral-theater piece Bonhoeffer will be premiered by The Crossing, directed by Donald Nally, in the Fall of 2012.
Lloyd has also led choirs on nine international tours, to Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Each of these tours has focused on shared concerts and repertoire with a diverse range of local choirs. Choirs under Lloyd’s direction have performed at conferences of Chorus America and the American Choral Directors Association. His articles have been published in the Choral Journal, The American Choral Review, The Journal of the Conductor's Guild, Troubador, and ChorTeach. He has led panel discussions at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, Chorus America, National Collegiate Choral Organization, and the International Federation of Choral Musicians. During his recent term as Repertoire & Standards Chair for Community Choirs, Eastern Division of the ACDA, Lloyd organized the first Community Choir Festival at the 2010 conference.
He also founded a nationally recognized “Singing for Seniors” program with the Bucks County Choral Society, bringing together senior choirs from all over the county for biannual festivals, with revered children’s choir conductor Helen Kemp as co-leader. Lloyd's diverse background includes a graduate degree in theology while a candidate for ordination in the Episcopal priesthood, and an eight-year stint as an IT manager on Wall Street, where he rose to the level of Vice President at Prudential Securities.

Research
Prof. Lloyd's research interests range from the history of the African-American Spiritual to teaching sacred music in secular contexts, choral performance practice in Renaissance music, international choral music, and the composers Robert Ramsey, Hans Gal, Jean Berger, and the Sacred Concerts of Duke Ellington. Current projects include a new concert-version of Kurt Weill’s rarely performed The Eternal Road.
He is also active as a choral composer and arranger, published by Alliance Music and performed by groups such as The Crossing, Philadelphia Singers, Moravian College Jazz Ensemble, and the Unionville High School Choir.
