Research
My current work explores the intersection between modernist poetics and American avant-garde filmmakers (Hollis Frampton, Maya Deren, Michael Snow, Ernie Gehr, Gregory Markopoulos, Marie Menken, Kenneth Anger, Paul Sharits). I am especially interested in considering how the experiments of the avant-garde can contribute to a philosophy of film that better understands its relatively short history as an aesthetic and a changing (or, as some would argue, disappearing) technology. My passion for teaching and writing about experimental film stems from an urgency (felt personally and more broadly within the field) to expand its audience and its availability especially through the resources of contemporary technology.
My other interests include literary theory and film theory, Anglo-Irish modernism, Samuel Beckett, Jorge Luis Borges, 20th century American poetry, photography, the contemporary biopic and digital cinema.
