The Grider lab is exploring how the nervous system grows and responds to injury. The ability to regenerate axons is highly dependent on the environment at the injury site. Using multiple model organisms, we are investigating the molecular mechanisms of neuronal survival following hypoxic injury and in axonal growth and regeneration. This year, we are particulalry interetested in the role of calpain, a calcium-mediated protease, in neuronal survival in response to ischemic or excitotoxic insults to the neurons. The lab is also investigating how Argon may attenuate neuronal loss following injury.
