Literature and Film on the American Landscape

In this course we will look at how contemporary writers and filmmakers are recasting individual subjectivity and national identity through works which show how identity shifts across geographic, sexual, and conceptual borders.

Readings will include:

• Gloria Andzaldua's Borderlands: LaFrontera
• Maya Angelou's I know Why the Caged Bird Sings
• Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men
• Leslie Marmon Silko and James Wright The Delicacy and Strength of Lace
• Mark Twain's Puddin'head Wilson
• John Edgar Wideman's Brothers and Keepers

Within and against this context, we will view a series of films by John Sayles including Return of the Secaucas Seven (1980), Brother From Another Planet (1984) Matewan (1987) City of Hope (1991), and Lone Star (1996).

Pre-requisites: Two 200 level English courses or consent of instructor
