In this course we will look at how contemporary writers and filmmakers are recasting individual subjectivity and national identity through works which show how identity shifts across geographic, sexual, and conceptual borders.

Readings will include:

Within and against this context, we will view a series of films by John Sayles including Return of the Secaucas Seven (1980), Brother From Another Planet (1984) Matewan (1987) City of Hope (1991), and Lone Star (1996).

Pre-requisites: Two 200 level English courses or consent of instructor
