I attended the University of Toronto from 1982-1986, earning a B.A. in Latin and English. Unable to choose between Classics and English, I went on to graduate school in Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley and received my PhD in 1994. During my time at Berkeley, I became accustomed, although never resigned, to answering the following questions: "What is Comparative Literature? What do you compare to what?" It is, therefore, a kind of relief to find myself in an English department for a change.

I am particularly interested in medieval conceptions of gender, masculine as well as feminine, and in interdisciplinary studies which move between relgion, literary criticism and art history. These interests are reflected both in my research and in the courses I have taught here at Haverford.

Current Courses:

ENGL 299 Junior Seminar T/Th 10-11:30
ENGL 201 Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales M/W 12:30-2

Office Hours (Fall 2001):
