I attended the University of Toronto from 1982-1986, earning a B.A. in English and Latin, and then the University of California at Berkeley, where I earned my M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. During my first ten years at Haverford, my research focused on medieval conceptions of gender, masculine as well as feminine; my book, Eloquent Virgins from Thecla to Joan of Arc came out in 2003. I am presently at work on a project dealing with medieval depictions of the Troy legend. I am particularly attracted to interdisciplinary studies which move between religion, literary criticism and art history. These interests are reflected both in my research and in the courses I have taught here at Haverford. Current Courses:
