Studio Cigarettes, Advertising Showcard from 1914, Imperial War Museum Collections, London

What is war in the West without cigarettes? Here the English soldier is offering his French compatriot a lesson in English, "Smith's Studio Cigarettes." Note the leisurely pose on the open wooden fence, the bright white tents of the encamped army in the background, the rather too obvious conviviality of the relationship between the French soldier and his English "tutor."
