The haunted wood, Guillemont, August 1916

The soldiers that had to struggle to survive in this war had, not least, to labor each day to maintain hope in the midst of nature's death. Not only men were wounded and maimed hourly, momently, but trees and all the lives in nature. The twisted and blasted shapes of these trees evoke the grotesque distortions of the human figure in these fatal landscapes.
