The 12th century tympanum (portal) of the church
of St Lazarus at Autun. Above the door is a last Judgement;
Christ floats in the middle, above small figures of the
saved (on His right) and the damned (on his left). This
tympanum is considered to be one of the masterpieces of
romanesque art, and it is the only piece of sculpture from
this period to have been signed by the artist.

The artist's signature: the inscription below Christ's
feet reads GISELBERTUS HOC FECIT, Giselbertus made
this. We know nothing about Giselbertus beyond the
sculptures he produced for this church.

The "sleeping Eve" by Giselbertus, once a part of the
facade, now in the nearby Musee Rollin.

The trumeau (central support of a doorway) below
the tympanum shows St Lazarus, flanked by his two sisters,
Mary and Martha. Which one is which?
