This course will be a mixture of workshops and discussion of established poets’
work. Several poets will be reading in the Spring including John Ashbery, Ellen
Doré Watson, and Elizabeth Willis and attendance at these readings will
be mandatory. Watson and Willis will also come to workshop and discuss craft
with the class.
Readings will include: John Ashbery, Your Name Here; Ellen Doré Watson,
This Sharpening; Elizabeth Willis, Turneresque; Louise Glück, Averno; among
others.
Requirements:
You will write a one-page response to one poem in one book of your choosing
every two weeks. Otherwise, there will be a new poem due each week. The assignments
will be flexible and will range with the interests of the class. The last third
of the class will focus on revision.

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS COURSE YOU MUST SUBMIT 5 ORIGINAL POEMS TO The Haverford
English Department Office, (Woodside 100) BY DECEMBER 21. Submissions
should include contact information including email address. No electronic submissions.
You will receive notice of whether you’ve been accepted to the class at
the start of the spring semester.
