The Department of Economics and the Distinguished Visitors Program welcomed Steven Braun, Director of Macroeconomic Forecasting, Council of Economic Advisers, to campus on Wednesday, December 1. He gave a talk on Current Issues in the Macroeconomic Outlook: Stimulus, GDP Gap, and Recovery. Steven Braun joined the Council of Economic Advisers in 1996 as a senior economist, and became Director of Macroeconomic Forecasting two years later. He writes the "Macroeconomic Outlook" chapter of the annual Economic Report of the President, as well as articles for the Daily Economic Briefing of the President. His responsibilities include keeping the President informed of incoming macroeconomic news and data, and preparing the economic forecast that is used to estimate the Federal budget deficit, in addition to working on a variety of public finance issues. Before coming to the CEA, Dr. Braun worked as a forecaster at the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1995, interrupted by a two-year secondment to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris (1988-90).
