Haverford College
Department of Economics

Major & Minor Requirements

Major Requirements

Economics 105/106; 203 or 204; 300; 302; 304; and 396 (a two semester year-long senior thesis); four other semester courses above the 100 level, two of which are at the 300 level of which one must be a junior research seminar; two semesters of college-level calculus or equivalent. Students who have placed out of Econ 105 are required to take an additional 200 or 300 level Economics course.

Prospective majors are also advised to complete Economics 105/106, Economics 203/204 and either Economics 300 or Economics 302 before the end of the sophomore year.

Note: Because the curriculum changed in the 2009-2010 academic year, requirements for majors graduating in 2012 and 2013 are slightly different. The requirements listed above hold for all majors graduating in 2013. Majors graduating in 2012 had the option of taking a two semester introductory sequence of Economics 101 (Introduction to Microeconomics) and Economics 102 (Introduction to Macroeconomics), or just Economics 105. Those students taking Economics 101 and 102 will only be required to take 3 electives, with two being at the 300 level, of which one must be a junior research seminar.

Minor Requirements

Requirements for a minor in economics are: Economics 105/106; 203 or 204; 300 or 302; three other Economics courses at the 200 and/or 300 levels. The chair of the department serves as the minor advisor. Students who have placed out of Econ 105 are required to take an additional 200 or 300 level Economics course.
