Economic Endeavors - Economics Alumni Newsletter

As a department, we are working to expand our network of alumni. To further this effort, we created “Economic Endeavors,” an economics alumni newsletter, in the Fall of 2007. Our inaugural issue focused on alumni from 2000-07. Because we received such a large number of responses, we now reach out to alumni from all eras. Once again, we had an overwhelming number of responses from the Class of 1937 through the class of 2010.

Economics & CPGC

Center for Peace and Global Citizenship began the yearly sponsored seminar series on important economic issues of the day. The initial seminar focused on economic issues of the presidential election, and highlighted alumni David Wessel, ’75 and Timothy Taylor, ’82. The discussion was moderated by Caitlin Coslett '05, NYU School of Law, where she is a Lederman/Milbank Fellow in Law and Economics. October of last year we held the second seminar, The Economics of Health Care Reform with Gerard Anderson '73 and Timothy Taylor '82. The discussion was moderated by Dan Sacks, '08. This year's event, The Economics of Climate Change, took place on November 9, 2010. Panelists included Daniel Price '77 and Haverford distinguished friend Marc Stuart. Paul Minnice '09 served as the moderator. On October 20, 2011 we welcomed alumni Timothy Taylor '82, Jane Dokko '98 and Rebecca Saxton-Fox '06 to the campus. They offered a panel discussion on Rising Income Inequality: Causes and Consequences.

In addition, William Comanor, ’59, has endowed a fund for an annual spring alumni event, featuring a public talk by an eminent economist and followed by a banquet to celebrate his or her work. The inaugural lecture was held in April 2010, welcoming Dr. Michael Spence, 2001 Nobel Prize winner for his work in on the dynamics of information flows and market development. This year's Comanor lecture guest was Paul Krugman, recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize, and New York Times columnist. He visited our campus on Monday, March 28, 2011. In addition to leading a student seminar, he gave a public talk.

Raghiram Rajan, Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, will honor our campus on Wednesday, March 28 2012. In 2003 he recieved the distinguished inaugural Fisher Black Prize awarded by the American Finance Association. Click here for details on his visit.
