HAVERFORD COLLEGE

Area of Concentration in Mathematical Economics

2008-09 COURSES OF INTEREST

The table below lists courses that will be offered at Haverford College or Bryn Mawr College during the 2008-09 academic year that might be of interest to students enrolled in Haverford's concentration in mathematical economics.

Courses may be added to this list as appointments of visiting faculty members are finalized.

Additional courses that can fulfill requirements of the concentration are also offered at Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania.  Students considering taking courses at Penn should consult with Richard Ball (Associate Professor of Economics and Concentration Coordinator) or Lynne Butler (Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Department Representative for the concentration).

The courses required for the concentration fall into three categories:

Requirement A: For mathematics majors, 3 core courses in economics; for economics majors, 3 core courses in mathematics.

Requirement B: For mathematics majors, 1 additional elective in economics; for economics majors, 1 additional elective in mathematics.

Requirement C: For mathematics majors, two mathematics courses on topics applicable to economics; for economics majors, two economics courses that make substantial use of mathematical methods or reasoning.

In the table below, courses with an x in the column labeled MB may be used by mathematics majors to fulfill requirement B; courses with an x in the column labeled MC may be used by mathematics majors to fulfill requirement C; courses with an x in the column labeled EB may be used by economics majors to fulfill requirement B; and courses with an x in the column labeled EC may be used by economics majors to fulfill requirement C.
