PREMEDICAL ADVISING OFFICE
Chase Hall, Suite 208
Phone: 610-896-1148
Fax: 610-896-1338

Welcome! The Premed Advising office is here to help Haverford students and alumni interested in becoming physicians or in other health related careers. We think Haverford is a wonderful community for preparing to become a compassionate skilled physician with its Quaker values and accessible top caring faculty. We look forward to meeting you.

Our office is in Chase Hall, Suite 208.

Michele Taylor, the Pre-Health Professions Advisor, is available by appointment Monday and Friday during the academic year.

Cheryl Mathes, the Administrative Assistant, is available Monday through Friday mornings from 8:30-12:30 and by phone 610-896-1148. Call Lois to make an appointment with Jenette Wheeler.

Faculty advisors who work with the office also help students with premedical questions.

Michele Taylor has a meeting with all freshmen thinking about medicine as a career as they arrive to start college in Customs Week and meets with Upper Class Advisors who live with groups of freshmen during their first year. She welcomes students who want to discuss any questions or talk about the practice of medicine to make appointments with her throughout their time at Haverford. Students get to know her best during junior year as she meets with those ready to apply and helps them collect their letters of recommendation and make decisions during the application process.

Sprinkled through the school year are visits to the campus from Haverford alumni MDs, admissions officers and medical students so that students can have informal talks with a variety of medical professionals. Those students interested in getting announcements by email should contact Lois to get on the email list. MD alums provide shadowing for students as well, for more extended time for the student to learn about medicine as a career. Minority students work with Kaye Edwards teaching inner city high school science students.

With the new interdisciplinary science center and the Hughes Interdisciplinary Scholar grants, students majoring in science have the opportunity to delve into cutting edge science one on one with professors doing original and interdisciplinary research. Nonscience majors have excellent opportunities to develop close working relationships with faculty in their major during their junior and senior years as well.

Summer fellowships with projects created by applicants to help in medically related projects in underserved areas are popular for after the junior year.
