Welcome to Pre-Health at Haverford
The Pre-Health Office serves Haverford students and alumni who are interested in the health professions, including medicine, osteopathy, public health, dentistry, nursing, podiatry, physical therapy and more.
At Haverford College students can develop a particularly strong foundation for careers in these professions because of our academic excellence, opportunities for research and service, and humanistic Quaker values. In addition, given our convenient location outside of the city of Philadelphia, our students take advantage of numerous opportunities to volunteer and work in hospitals, clinics, and research facilities in the area. Haverford alumni have distinguished themselves as physicians in all areas of medicine and dentistry, as leaders in public health, and in satisfying practices as nurse practitioners, nutritionists, genetic counselors, physical therapists, and more.
Our office provides guidance and support to our students as they plan their pre health curriculum and extra curricular activities. We help them think through their schedules to fulfill admissions' prerequisites for medical schools and other programs in the health sciences; plan for summer and extracurricular activities; and strategize for when and how they will apply to medical or other health professions schools.
Our acceptance rate to medical schools, specifically, is substantially higher than national acceptance rates and compares to those of peer institutions and Ivy League schools. In 2010, the average GPA of our accepted candidates to medical school was a 3.51, and average MCAT score was 31. Haverfordians are currently attending leading medical schools throughout the country. This group includes Stanford, Boston U, University of Conn., Albany, Tulane, University of Vermont, University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Yale, UC San Francisco, Harvard, Penn, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Einstein, Mt. Sinai, University of Chicago, NYU, Columbia, University of Pittsburgh, Penn State, Emory, Dartmouth, Rochester, Case Western, Jefferson, Temple, Drexel, Georgetown, UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson, Oregon Health & Science University, and the Universities of Florida, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Miami, Ponce, and Puerto Rico. Haverford’s recent graduates are also represented at osteopathic (PCOM, UNECOM, WESTERN U, NYCOM) and dental schools (Temple, NYU, Pitt, Penn), and at Ph.D. programs in biomedical science and public health.
