International Students

International Students Check List 2010-2011

MexicoPrior to Leaving for ISO:

  • Obtain F-1 Visa
  • Arrange travel plans—purchase airline ticket so that you arrive on time for ISO
  • Purchase Travel Insurance to cover medical emergencies, personal liability, property insurance, loss, etc.
  • Place SEVIS I-20 Form with your valid passport, SEVIS Fee receipt, documentation of financial resources and airline tickets or voucher in a safe place
  • Complete ISO Registration Form
  • Send your travel Itinerary to the Director of International Student Services
  • If need be, arrange for travel assistance from Philadelphia Airport, 30th Street Station, or Haverford Train Station with Director of International Student Services
  • Bring small amount of U.S. Currency to cover immediate expenses such as train ticket, taxi fare, tips, meals (gratuity 15%), and consumer taxes (6%-7%)
  • Bring funds for Winter clothing shopping
  • Bring one suit of clothing in your carry-on luggage (at times luggage does get lost in transit)
  • Remove all sharp objects, such as finger nail files, nail clippers, razors, scissors, pocket knives, from your carry-on luggage
  • Carry your medication in the container dispensed by the physician and or pharmacy
  • Place “Emergency Contact Card” in your wallet
  • Give parents one of the “Emergency Contact Cards”
  • Leave a copy of your travel itinerary with your parents/guardians
  • Review travel warnings
  • Apply for an International Driver’s License if you plan to drive in the U.S.
  • Purchase an international SIM card for your cell phone
  • Place tags (identification) on your luggage. Include your name, Haverford’s mailing address, and a contact telephone numbers, which should include Dean’s Office number – 610-896-1232. Place similar identification inside your luggage.
  • Pictures of family members for those moments!
  • Bring something that reflects your culture for show and tell during ISO

Instructional and Information Technology Services:

  • Activate your Haverford email account
  • Complete Technology Orientation quiz

BrazilBusiness Office:

  • Be prepared to meet financial obligations at Haverford (Check drawn on a U.S. bank or Wire Transfer of funds is acceptable) (due in August for the Fall semester and January for the Spring semester)

Dean of First-Year Students:

  • Activate your e-mail account (due in May)
  • Take required Placement Exams (due in August)
  • Submit Writing Placement Exam (due in July)
  • Submit Advisor Letter to Dean of First-Year Students (due in July)

Health Services:

You cannot participate in ISO unless you have health insurance coverage that meets Haverford's requirements.

  • Return medical health records to Health Services (due in May)
  • Purchase Health Insurance at least $50,000; must be effective in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (due in May)

Housing:

  • Submit Housing Questionnaire (due in May/June)
  • Mail picture of self for One-Card Haverford College ID (due in May/June)
  • Order bed linens (due in July)
  • Be sure to provide the Housing Office with an email address where you can be reached during the summer months (May/June)

Registrar:

  • Submit Student Entry Record (SER)
  • Submit your Privacy Request Form for the online and hardcopy directories

Note: Cash in the amount of $10,000 (U.S.) or more must be declared on your customs form provided in-flight by the flight attendants. Failure to do so might result in a Customs official confiscating your cash. It is the law!
