The Alliance

Race is the biggest pink elephant in the room, probably the biggest one ever known in the history of man. It affects how we think, how we act, how we feel and influences directly or indirectly almost every decision we make. It is also one of the least talked about subjects in American society, and Haverford College is no exception. What's happening in the "real" world out there in America is also happening on our small "liberal" arts campus. Much dissatisfaction has been expressed by students on campus about the lack of meaningful dialogue at Haverford on matters pertaining to race. Simply put, the Alliance wishes to serve as the space on campus where those so inclined can come together (in a cross-cultural, cross-racial, cross-ethnic, cross-fill-in-the-blank sort of way) to discuss in a meaningful, intellectual-but-not-necessarily-academic sort of way about issues directly pertaining to race.

Race will be the overall focus of the group- not any specific minority or non-minority, not any ethnicity, religion, etc. and race will continue to be the main focus of the group. Of course, inevitably other issues related to race will come up along the way-class, sexuality, gender (in)equality, etc.- but race will the overall focus. Why? Because racial issues are the things that probably should be talked about the most but are talked about the least. Why? Because race is a difficult and uncomfortable topic to discuss, even with your closest friends. The Alliance is here to serve as a means of fostering discussions that will attempt to deeply explore racism, really explore the issues and not just skim the surface issues as we so often tend to do.We are not purporting to be experts on racism, we are not purporting to try and "educate" on race, and we are not trying to recreate the Trico experience. What we are trying to do is have the same sort of interpersonal dialogue that occurred at places like Trico when students were open and honest and able to really talk about race as an issue. If there is a seeming underlying sense of vagueness permeating this statement of purpose it is because the Alliance will ultimately be whatever the students in the group wish for it to be, and it should be what the students as a whole want it to be.

However, that being said- wherever there are gaps in racial matters on Haverford's campus, the Alliance will be there to closely examine them and fill them in. Wherever there are tensions and misunderstandings on campus, the Alliance will attempt to explore the root of these problems, not just try to solve them. Wherever there is race happening at Haverford (and it's happening every second, everywhere, in the people and things we see and the ones we cannot), the Alliance will be there to address it, scrutinize it, and ultimately to try and come to terms with it. We're essentially going to smash open the pink elephant in the room, delving inside to see what it's really made out of, and from there we'll begin.

ALAS: Alliance of Latino American Students

The goal of the Alliance of Latin American Students is to raise awareness on the different Latin American cultures within the Haverford community and more importantly, to increase the appreciation of these various cultures. These goals are exemplified though the many activities that the club sponsors. Some of our activities are La Fiesta and Bohemian night. La Fiesta is a dance where a live band and DJ play Latino music such as salsa and meringue. The Bohemian night is an old tradition that we are trying to revive where students and professors gather to recite poetry of Latin American authors such as Pablo Neruda and Alfonsina Storni. In general, we are just trying to expose Latinism to the Haverford community. During our weekly meetings, held Thursdays at 9pm in the MCC, we discuss issues that affect Latinos both in the U.S. and abroad.
