Haverford College
OMA

Tri-College Equity, Identity, and Social Justice Institute

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) is recruiting Student Resource People (SRPs) for the Tri-College Equity, Identity, and Social Justice Institute scheduled for August 21-27, 2013 (SRPs will arrive on campus on August 18 for trainings and to prepare for the institute). SRPs work with staff and faculty members drawn from the Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore campuses in facilitating workshops on issues of multiculturalism, skills for negotiating cross-cultural differences, and strategies for becoming agents of social change for 60 incoming first year students. Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore students will reside on their home campuses and will circulate between the three colleges for workshops and activities.

Tri-Co is a flagship program for the Rufus Jones Leadership Institute and the Office of Multicultural Affairs; participants draw from their experiences and insights as well as from contemporary critical theories and practices as a means of forging connections and collaborations with community members of many different backgrounds – a key part of the collective project of fostering a vital and diverse community.

SRPs have a broad range of responsibilities:

  • To actively participate in planning for Tri-Co and to fully engage in the SRP training process
  • To be a mature and responsible mentor to the incoming students who take part in Tri-Co
  • To work collaboratively with Tri-Co staff
  • To help facilitate workshops
  • To act as a resource person in the dorm, and to act as a liaison to campus office and departments during the course of the program.

In addition to working with Tri-Co staff on coordinating collective programming from August 21-24, Haverford SRPs will take a lead in planning the Haverford-specific segment of the program, the Multicultural Leadership Institute (MLI) that will run through the beginning of Customs. MLI will enable Haverford students to learn more about opportunities for community engagement through programs such as Haverford House, to connect with key organizations and offices on Haverford’s campus, and to develop their leadership skills and capacities for consensus-building.

Mandatory SRP training will take place twice during the spring semester--Friday, April 19 at 6:00 PM on one of the Tri-Co campuses and another date TBD--and during the week of August 19th. SRPs will receive a modest stipend of $550; a lead SRP who will act as the primary coordinator of the Haverford SRPs will receive a stipend of $600.

For questions, please contact Dean Theresa Tensuan (ttensuan@haverford.edu) or Dean Raisa Williams (rwilliam@haverford.edu). Please note that students who are participating in the Customs Program will not be able to take on the role of an SRP for Tri-Co/MLI because of conflicts between the program and Customs training.
