Location: Seoul
Yonsei University has a large, quiet, well-wooded campus in the
center of a city of 12 million, only 20 minutes from the centers
of government, business, and culture. 25% of the South Korean population
and 40% of Korean college students live in Seoul. Korea has maintained
its own identity despite its unenviable position at the crossroads
of major Asian conflicts. Culture, art, and history exist in abundance.

About the University: Yonsei
is the oldest university in Korea, having celebrated its 120th anniversary
in 2005. It took its present form as an integrated university and
medical complex in 1957 with the union of two major interdenominational
institutions founded by Protestant missionaries to Korea. The university
is regarded as one of the best private universities in Korea.
Fields of Study: Courses
offered in Art History, Business, Chinese, Communications, East
Asian Studies, Economics, History, International Relations, Korean
Language, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology.
Number of Students: Approximately
35,000 of whom 4,600 are undergraduates.
Academic Credit: Students
must take 15-16 semester credit hours each semester. The Korean
language course is 6 credit hours; all other courses are 3 credit
hours each. 
Program Notes: The program
curriculum focuses on Korean and East Asian Studies. Qualified students
can choose to take courses in Korean at the university. The library
has a collection of roughly one million books. Students have access
to the campus’s numerous computer labs. Strict penalties for
drug possession and use!
Special Requirements: Sophomores, juniors and seniors
with a GPA of 2.5 or higher may apply. Students are required to
take East Asian Studies 201: Introduction to Korea. Students must
enroll in an appropriate-level Korean language course. Fulfills
Haverford’s language requirement.
Housing: In dormitories
or the International House. Full year students are encouraged to
arrange a home-stay for themselves second semester.
Orientation: Includes
course registration and Language Placement Exam.
