Budapest Semester in Mathematics


Dates:

Fall Semester (Semester I) : Late August to late December
Spring Semester (Semester II): Mid-January to late May

Application Deadlines: February 15 (Fall) and October 15 (Spring)

Location: Budapest

Budapest, called “little Paris on the Danube,” is a city of two million, situated on both sides of the river Danube. The city retains a rich cultural heritage. Students can visit Roman ruins, mosques from the 16th century, the old castle district of Buda, historic synagogues and artifacts of Jewish life from the time prior to Nazi occupation, and the architectural remnants of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Budapest hosts eleven universities, two opera and ballet theatres, scores of theatres, museums, and art collections, plus many cinemas, discos, and sports arenas. Classes are held on the College International campus of the Technical University Budapest which is near the historic city center.

Languages of Instruction: English

Fields of Study: Wide range of courses offered in Mathematics. Additional courses include Making of Modern Central Europe, Hungarian Language, Hungarian Art and Culture, Old and Mew World Political Philosophy, Historical Aspects of Mathematics and Physics.

Number of Students: A maximum of 60 students attends each semester.

Academic Credit: In order for credit to be transferable to Haverford, math students must take a total of 4 courses, 2-4 math courses and 1-2 intercultural courses. Students who choose to take only 2 math courses must take a total of 5 courses to receive 4 Haverford credits. Students are required to take a course in the Hungarian language.

Program Notes:
Recommended for Math and Computer Science majors. Professors are from the Eotvos University and Mathematics Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Two institutions famous for educating highly acclaimed mathematicians). Professors work closely with students, monitoring individual progress. Problem solving and creativity are encouraged.

Special Requirements:
Sophomores, juniors and seniors that have completed at least one semester of advanced calculus or abstract algebra may apply. Students should be motivated to study math. Students must enroll in an appropriate-level Hungarian language course. Fulfills Haverford foreign language requirement.

Housing: Furnished apartment or home-stay; guaranteed.

Orientation: Special orientation program to the Hungarian language is offered.

Visa: Not required to enter the country. The program will inform students of the documents needed to apply for residency permit and will assist with the application.

Fees: Students pay tuition only to Haverford College.
