Training Schedule - Summer 2008

Academic Computing and Administrative Computing are pleased to offer the following educational opportunities for all Haverford faculty and staff. Others may attend, with instructor approval, as space permits. Arrangements can often be made for those bringing their own laptops.

Tech Tuesdays

"Tech Tuesdays" are a regular, weekly series of technology demonstrations. These informational sessions, offered each Tuesday from 12:15pm - 1:00pm, are brown bag demonstrations designed to facilitate questions and conversation. Each session is independent, and most are offered just once - register for as many as you like.

Tech Tuesdays are not offered during the summer. Check back in the fall for new offerings!

WINDOWS: Introduction to Vista
Objective:	To improve productivity by learning what Vista offers and how to use its features efficiently.
Description:	Microsoft has added several new features to Vista, its latest operating system. After this workshop you will be able to find and open programs and documents quickly, customize your system to meet your needs and preferences, and take advantage of new tools such as the sidebar and gadgets. This course is suggested for anyone with a new Vista system.

MAC OS: Leopard Basics - Upgrading to Mac OS 10.5
Objective:	Navigate your new Macintosh operating system easily. Find, save, backup, and print the files you need, when you need them.
Description:	Macintosh OS X 10.5 (Leopard) came out last fall and added many new features to the Macintosh. Save time learning to navigate your new or upgraded system and find out how to overcome common pitfalls by attending this introductory session. This workshop is recommended for anyone who recently upgraded to Leopard, either by getting a new Macintosh or upgrading their OS.

Objective:	Use your Macintosh more efficiently and effectively by taking advantage of Leopard's best features.
Description:	Make the most of your new operating system. Learn how key new features, as well as hidden features, can boost your productivity.

MEETING MAKER: Making the Most of Your Calendar
Objective:	To broaden your understanding of Meeting Maker fuctionality, learning a few tips and tricks along the way.
Description:	Meeting Maker enables users to view the availability of others, send out meeting invitations, accept/decline meetings directly from within a calendar view, and even reserve essential meeting resources such as conference rooms and A/V equipment. Learn how to do each of these and more!

WEB: Introducing FireFox
Description:	Since the launch of the new Haverford.edu, users are being encouraged to adopt Mozilla Firefox as their internet browser. But did you know about its innovative, time-saving features? Learn to use the handy search and highlight tool, do "quick searches" of web sites you frequently visit, used tabbed browsing, and more.

WEB: Using Dreamweaver to Create and Edit your Web Pages
Description:	In this two-day class, you will learn the basics of web editing with Dreamweaver: learn to create and edit pages, use styles to manage formatting, and utilize other built-in Dreamweaver tools. We'll discuss best practices, talk about how to integrate Haverford's dynamic calendar and news content, and more.

WEB: Web 2.0 in Teaching - Digital Storytelling
Description:	The new web, Web 2.0, has brought a large number of digital storytelling tools. In this workshop, you will learn various digital storytelling tools. You will be asked to create one short project using one of the tools during the workshop. At the end of the workshop, we will share the projects and discuss how you could use the tools for your teaching.

WEB: Web 2.0 in Teaching - Collaboration Tools
Description:	Digital technology can be used to enrich and expand the traditional classroom. In this workshop, you will try a few video-conference tools, mobile devices and social presence tools like Twitter, and social bookmark tools. At the end of the workshop, we will discuss how we can use these tools for collaborative learning and teaching.

WEB: Web 2.0 in Teaching - Google Apps
Description:	Google's productivity tools, Google Docs, help you to work with others and share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. In this workshop, we will examine various features of Google Docs and discuss how we could use these tools for collaborative teaching and learning.

PHOTOSHOP: Prepare your Digital Photos for the Web or Print
Description:	Digital images let you share photos via the Web, Blackboard, email, newsletters and other printed formats. In this workshop you will learn some of the theory behind digital imagery, and apply that knowledge to get the best results for your distribution format of choice. By resizing, cropping, rotating, and making adjustment to color and exposure, you can significantly enhance the quality of your images. If you use photos in web pages, presentations, documents, or other media, and would like to enhance the quality of those images, consider taking this introductory workshop.
Prerequisites:	None. The class is for those new to digital photo editing, as well as those looking for a refresher on the basics.

PHOTOSHOP: Advanced Topics - Layers and Masks
Description:	Once you have mastered the basics of sizing, cropping, rotating and basic color correction, you may want to add style, humor, detail, or annotations to your images. With Photoshop your options are endless, but they don't have to be overwhelming. Once you understand a bit about layers and masks you can start taking advantage of the power Photoshop offers.
Prerequisites:	Prepare your Digital Photos for the Web or Print or experience using Photoshop.

MULTIMEDIA: Create Videos with iMovie
Description:	Whether you want to post on YouTube or create an instructional video for your class, you can do it! All you need is a video camera, a Macintosh with iMovie (or similar computer/software setup), some creativity and know-how. Videos are a great tool for teaching, sharing information, or expressing ideas. In this workshop, you will learn how to shoot scenes and use those scenes to create your own short video. Learn concepts in the mornings; work on your video in the afternoons. You bring the creativity. We'll supply the rest. (You may bring our own video camera, if you wish.)

BLACKBOARD: Beyond Course Readings - Blackboard Tools
Objective:	To become familiar with Blackboard's most popular tools.
Description:	Most courses use Blackboard to post a syllabus and readings, but only few take advantage of the many other tools this software offers. Blackboard provides a space where students can collaborate on projects and share multimedia (i.e. audio, video, images). It also helps you to collect and organized assignments and to manage grades. In this workshop, you will get an overview of Blackboard's communication and gradebook tools. Learn how to use blogs, wikis, and assignments to meet your needs and those of your students. Discuss the best practices of these tools will other participants. Workshop participants will get hands-on experience with the following: setting up group and individual blogs and wikis incorporating audio, video, and images into blog and wiki posts using the assignment tool to collect, organize, and evaluate student work using the gradebook to provide feedback to your students.
Prerequisites:	None, although previous experience in Blackboard is helpful.

GIS: Getting Started with Google Earth
Description:	You may have used Google Earth to get a bird's eye view of your home. However, did you know you can use it to see geographic features, calculate distances, link any place on earth with a web page (and visa versa), and take advantage of existing Google Earth maps of historic events and current issues. In this workshop we will use Google Earth to navigate the globe, find points of interest, create place marks, draw paths, and use basic analysis tools.
