The Program in Comparative Literature
Major RequirementsStudents must take all of the following required courses:
To these they will add six national literature courses in the original languages at the 200 level or above, balanced between two literature departments (of which English may be one). At least two of these courses, one in each literature, should be at the 300 level. One theory course in the major is also required. The following courses have in the past fulfilled this requirement: History of Literary Criticism; The Play of Interpretation; Romanticism and Philosophy; Literary Theory and Christian Theology; The Disenchantment of the World; Modes of Translation; Twentieth-Century Continental Philosophy; Aesthetics; Narratives of Interpretation; Theories of Reading; Nietzsche and Modern Cultural Criticism; Topics in Art Criticism; Allegory in Theory and Practice. Finally, two electives in the major are also required. Sample courses include 250: Quixotic Narratives; 277: Postcolonial Women Writers; Gender and Race in 18th-Century Literature; Anthropology of the Mediterranean; The Middle Eastern Lyric; 218: The Western Dramatic Tradition; The Novel; 216: Fiction of the Holocaust; The Literatures of Francophone Africa; Minority Literatures in Spain; Words and Music; Women and Opera; Plutarch and His Readers; Women's Narratives of Migrancy, Exile, and Diasporas; Landscape Art in Cultural Perspective; Islamic Literature; Topics in Autobiography Students are encouraged to begin study of a second foreign language early in their career if they are considering graduate study in Comparative Literature. Minor RequirementsStudents must take the following required courses:
To these they will add four advanced literature courses in the original languages (normally at the 200 level or above) divided between two literatures, of which English may be one. At least one of these four must be at the 300 level. Note: Comp. Lit. minors are encouraged to choose their national literature courses from those with a comparative component. Requirements for HonorsStudents who, in the judgment of the Advisory Committee in Comparative Literature, have done distinguished work in their Comparative Literature courses and in the Senior Seminar will be considered for Departmental Honors.
