Syllabus of Activities > Weeks 12 & 13

Week 12

Tuesday, November 28: Ovid on the Trojan War and its Aftermath

Read: Ovid, Metamorphoses Books 11-14 (I recommend reading the entire packet, but our discussion will focus on the explicitly "Trojan" myths in pp. 369-371, 377-380, 401-416, 432-507) and Ovid, Heroides 1 (Penelope) and 7 (Dido); Optional: Letters by Briseis and Laodamia (included in packet)

Introduction to Ovid

Thursday, November 30

Read: Dares, History of Troy's Destruction; Optional: Ovid, Heroides (16-17: the exchange between Paris and Helen)

Week 13

Tuesday, December 5: Shakespeare's Troy

Read: Shakespeare, Troilus and Cressida

Thursday, December 7: Troy & the Romantics

Read: Packet of Romantic poets (includes selection from Dante's Inferno and Chapman's translation of Homer; you will be prompted to read this at the appropriate point in the packet)

If you would like to have some additional background about Romanticism or any of the authors, their Wikipedia entries are reasonably adequate on these matters.
