DUE: First Paper: Trace the development of an aspect of Hector’s characterization in the Iliad. (Full Assignment)

 

Week 4

Tuesday, September 26

Read:Illiad Bks. 21-24.

Thursday, September 28

Read: Homer, Odyssey Bks. 1-4.

Review: the aftermath of the war and the nostoi (homecomings) of the Greeks in the Tale of Troy (sections 15-22) and Section D of the Outline of the Trojan Cycle ("The Returns-Nostoi)

Focus Questions:

  1. As you read the opening of the Odyssey, note ways in which the epic is similar to and different than the Iliad, both stylistically and in terms of content.
  2. As the story of Odysseus' homecoming begins to unfold, where is he? The narrative will only shift to him at the start of Book 5. Why begin the epic in this way?
