Errors in Silberberg's 5th edition of Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change (McGraw Hill 2009).
I have noticed the following errors in this text:

p. 119, bottom right: The caption on the margin figure (which was added in the 5th edition) is incorrect, because if the series of reactions proceeded perfectly (all 100% yields) the mass of product would be more than the mass of starting 1,2-dichlorobenzene because some of the reactions in the series involve adding other compounds to bring in the left side (as drawn) of the sertraline molecule. A correct caption would be "Starting with 100 mol (14.7 kg) of 1,2-dichorobenzene ... the yield of sertraline is only 4.6 mol (1.41 kg)."
page 157: A printing error left out descriptions of acid/base reactions as one or two proton transfers (the missing characters are enclosed in "clouds" on the pictures below). The publisher has informed me that this will be fixed in subsequent printings.
pp. 162, 163, 164: An unfortunate printing error occured in the student edition (not the instructor edition) that left out important information on oxidation numbers and number of electrons lost by species as they are oxidized. This makes the student edition confusing in its presentations of sample problems 4.9 and 4.10. The following scans out of the instructors textbook show what it these pages should look like (the "clouds" surround the text that is missing in the student edition). You can zoom in on the images by clicking on them. The publisher has informed me that this will be fixed in subsequent printings.
page 307, Figure 8.4. In the last line of the figure caption, replace the word "an" with "a 2s". (Explanation: If the Li2+ were in the ground state, i.e. the electron were in the 1s orbital, it would be require even more energy (11810 kJ/mol) to remove it.)
page 446: A printing error left out the equation "y = mx + b" from the student edition of the textbook (the missing characters are enclosed in "clouds" on the pictures below). The publisher has informed me that this will be fixed in subsequent printings.
page A-21: Answers to 7.13 and 7.55 are incorrectly reported. Answer to 7.13 should be 1.3483x107 nm; 1.3483x108 Å. Question 7.55 asked for sublevel designations, which is synonymous with sublevel names. The question gives you n as well as l, so the answers (sublevel names) should include the number as well as letter: 4d, 5p and 6f. There is no need to specify the l value in parentheses after giving the sublevel designation.
