Haverford College Chemistry 100A: General Chemistry I
In the Fall of 2008 we will be offering three sections of Chem 100 (for more information, see below). Students must fill out a placement questionnaire and receive a recommendation before enrolling in any section.
Section 1 (Environmental Chemistry emphasis) |
Section 2 (Material Science emphasis)
|
Section 3 (intensive)
|
Laboratory for Chem 100 (website /LAB SECTIONING FORM/ rescheduling form)
- Students in all three sections of Chem 100 share the same laboratory experience.
- Laboratory sections are held from 1-4 pm in KINSC E305 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.
- Dennis Collin is the laboratory instructor and Kathy Dostal is the instructional laboratory supervisor.
- The web site for the lab (www.haverford.edu/chem/100/lab) contains a schedule of lab experiments and links to files that are needed for some of the experiments.
More About Sections 1, 2 and 3 of Chem 100, Fall 2008
First of all, we want all students taking Chem 100 (any section) to have filled out the Chemistry placement questionnaire. That includes students without any previous Chemistry course experience. Students who fill this out late (after 11 a.m. on 8/28) should email tnewirth@haverford.edu to request their placement result.
Unless they are placed in a more advanced course, the placement recommendation will be either
100(1 or 2)
100(3)
100(1 or 2) OR 100(3)
The numbers in parentheses indicate the section number. All three sections will explore the same fundamental chemical concepts, and all are designed to prepare students to continue with Chem 101 in the spring. Students from all three sections have the same laboratory experience, and must be available for lab from 1-4 pm on either Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday afternoon. Sign up for lab sections occurs using the form below on this web page; students must accept any afternoon lab placement that does not conflict with another enrolled class.
Section 3 is the intensive, 5 lecture hours per week, section (taught by Fran Blase). The first class meeting is Tuesday morning at 9:00 in Koshland E309. Section 3 is available only to students with a placement recommendation of either "100(3)" or "100(1 or 2) OR 100(3)". There are no recitation sections for Section 3.
Students deciding between sections 1 and 2 will find the following information useful. Section 1 (taught by Rob Scarrow, first class 9:30 Wednesday Hilles 108) will emphasize applications of Chemistry to Environmental Science. Section 2 (taught by Alex Norquist , first class 9:30 Wednesday Hilles 109) will emphasize applications of Chemistry to Materials Science. Sections 1 and 2 will each have their own pair of hour-long recitations (students choose one); section 1 recitations will be on Mondays (1:00 and 2:30) and section 2 recitations on Tuesdays (9:00 and 2:30). For some students, the recitation (which recitation fits in with their schedule?) will be the deciding factor between sections 1 and 2, while others can simply choose what fits their interests the best.
