Career Development Office - Internships & Summer Jobs

THE WHITEHEAD INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Whitehead Internship Program is funded by a Haverford alumnus, honoring John C. Whitehead '43, to encourage Haverford students, who have completed their junior or sophomore year, to engage in a summer work experience related to entrepreneurial endeavors, small business enterprise, venture capital or investment finance activities. The fund fosters hands on education and experience supporting interests in entrepreneurism. The intent is to provide appropriate stipends, and living expenses if necessary, for summer work experiences for which students might not otherwise receive the funding that their financial commitments require.

Each year an effort will be made by the College to secure commitment from several internship sponsors specifically for this program. The College will target its efforts to develop internships with Haverford alumni.

Students may apply to, and seek funding for, internships identified by the College OR other internship opportunities, to which they have applied or have secured, which relate to the focus of the Whitehead program.

All applicants must include:

  • a resume
  • a transcript
  • a completed Whitehead Internship Funding Request Form
  • a letter of recommendation from a bi-co faculty/staff member
  • a statement of interest outlining your interests, related experience, your motivation for engaging in this experience and how the internship relates to career direction. (1-2 pages double spaced) For College Secured Internships we ask that you DO NOT specifically name organizations in your statement.
  • Schedule an appointment with CDO upon submitting application.

In addition ...

Students applying for any of the College Secured Whitehead Internships must submit

  • a separate sheet listing the College Secured Whitehead Internships for which they would like to be considered.

Students seeking funding for other internships, for which they are under consideration or have been accepted, which have NOT been secured by the College for this program, must submit:

  • a brief description of the internship provided by the sponsor
  • literature on the sponsoring organization (If taken from a web site, you must note it as the source.)
  • written communication from the sponsor regarding the student's status as a candidate.

APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO HAVERFORD'S CDO. Applications cannot be submitted through OCEAN. Application deadline is Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

Past College Secured Whitehead Internships Sponsors

The following is a list of some recent past College Secured Whitehead Internship sponsors. At the time of this posting, sponsors listed here have not made arrangements for internships for summer 2009 but, as past participants, we consider them to be potential sponsors. Other sponsors, not listed here, may also develop before the application deadline.

Students should be sure to check the Whitehead Internship Box in the Haverford office of Career Development or the designated "1 click 'Whitehead Internship Program 2009'" search option in the OCEAN internships database for up to date College Secured Whitehead Internship offerings.
