Summer Research Assistantships
In addition to the above internships/grants, the College also funds summer research assistantships in which students collaborate in the research and scholarly projects of faculty members. Applications for funding are initiated by faculty members and selection of students for these opportunities is coordinated by departments, centers and individual faculty members. Some 50-60 assistantships are funded each year from a variety of sources including grants from foundation and government sources and internal funds. Check with faculty for availability.


Andrew Silk Summer Journalism Internship
Supports a summer internship in print or broadcast journalism.
Eligibility: Current HC and BMC first-year, sophomores and juniors

Center for Peace and Global Citizenship Internships
CPGC's Self-Designed Internships
CPGC invites students to develop summer internships which deepen and expand their classroom learning and allow them to engage with organizations in the non-profit, educational, public or private sectors doing work related to the mission of the Center. Internships must be related to students’ coursework, and can be research and/or service-oriented. Internships are full-time work commitments and range in duration from four to ten weeks (8-10 week internships are preferred). Students whose projects are approved are awarded funds to cover living and travel expenses, and include the summer earnings expectation of those receiving financial aid. Students selected for the program attend a weekend-long orientation (April 17-19) and enroll in a course for returned interns during Fall 2009 semester (students studying abroad Spring 2009 or Fall 2010 are eligible apply- contact CPGC for more info on making up requirements).

Deborah Lafer-Scher International Internship
Provides a summer stipend of $2,000 to assist with living and travel expenses associated with pursuing a relevant international experience outside the United States and preferably outside the North America Hemisphere.

F. Page Newton History Fund
Supports student development in the profession of history.

Gertrude Albert Heller Memorial Grant
Encourages students to work with individuals with developmentally disabilities/neurological disorders in direct care (areas include, but are not limited to individuals with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's, to name a few).

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Interdisciplinary Science Scholars Program
This interdisciplinary program of research and coursework is supported by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It includes a broad range of fields, including biochemistry, biophysics, and bioinformatics, materials science, nanotechnology and applied mathematics. Interdisciplinary Scholars commit themselves to a course of study which has a strong foundation in the experimental sciences, mathematics, or psychology, and explores upper level science and math outside of the major. HHMI Interdisciplinary Scholars participate in 10 weeks of research at Haverford during the summer, and present their work to students and faculty during a poster session held in the fall.
Eligibility: Sophomore or Junior students majoring in the sciences at Haverford with interests in interdisciplinary science. This year, one or two freshmen students will also be selected. Students with strong academic performance or with clear evidence of steadily improving performance. Although academic performance is one of the selection criteria, enthusiasm about science and interest in exploring a career in interdisciplinary science are also important attributes of a successful applicant.

John B. Hurford '60 Humanities Center - Various Opportunities
Details: The Center's Humanities internships offer rising Haverford Seniors apprenticeships at such host institutions as arts organizations, historical or scholarly societies, publishers, community groups with interests in humanities related activity. This program provides opportunities for students to consider how their interests relate to the world beyond Haverford and then to bring that experience to their final year at the College. The Center pays for 10 uninterrupted weeks of full time work (June-August).

Kessinger Family Fund for Community Service
Description: Established in 1989 to support individual students or groups of students undertaking community service projects or internships either during the academic year or summer vacation
Eligibility: This internship is open to any Haverford first year, sophomore, or junior who has an interest in community service projects. There is a preference for international projects but domestic programs will also be considered. A candidate must demonstrate a high level of commitment to the work proposed, and indicate how the project will affect their longer term involvement (academic or practical) with community service work.

Lambda Alumni Internship Program
Description: Funds one student engaged in a summer work experience with charitable organizations, societies, associations, or groups that focus on causes, concerns, and issues that affect the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities.

Primary Care Pre-Medical Internship Fund
Provides summer stipends for pre-med students working at healthcare agencies to gain experience in primary care with underserved populations. Students find location and mentor. Project may be funded for 1 to 4 weeks in duration, depending on number of students receiving the fellowship. Past projects have included an understaffed medical clinic near home, a Planned Parenthood Clinic, a Philadelphia needle exchange project, a clinic for the homeless, the Mom mobile, serving inner-city teenage mothers, and with Unite for Sight abroad.

Smart Family Internship Grant
To support students to engage in a summer internship in the communications field. To assist with expenses associated with pursuing a relevant experience in print or broadcast journalism. The student needs to obtain a summer position within the field of communications (television, radio, print publication, advertising, public relations).

Provides summer stipend to students involved in public interest projects in the Philadelphia area.

Sutasoma Charitable Trust Fund
Description: Created in 1992 to support overseas student research in the humanistic social sciences.
Eligibility: This internship is open to any Haverford first year, sophomore, or junior who has an interest in research abroad in a topic related to the humanistic social sciences. A candidate must demonstrate a high level of commitment to the work proposed, and indicate how the project is based in and will affect their longer term involvement (academic or practical) with the project topic. Students intending to do research in conjunction with a senior thesis or other major academic research project will be given preference.

Whitehead Internship Program
Funded by a Haverford alumnus, honoring John C. Whitehead '43, to encourage Haverford students, who have completed their junior or sophomore year, to engage in a summer work experience related to entrepreneurial endeavors, small business enterprise, venture capital or investment finance activities.

BRYN MAWR SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE TO HAVERFORD STUDENTS

Ariadne Solter Fund
The fund supports a BMC or HC undergraduate in a summer internship/experience involved with a project in a developing country or in underdeveloped areas of the US . Applicants must have identified/applied for a prospective internship/project.

Dance Study Grant
Funding given by Edith Avilés de Kostes (BMC '88) to fully or partially support a student or students in an intensive summer program of dance study in technique, performance or composition in a nationally or internationally recognized program. The grant may also be used for pursuing a unique research project in which the actual study and practice of technique, performance or composition is an integral part of the project.
Eligibility: current Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors
Funding: Stipend up to $3600

  3. Indication of whether you will need full or partial support.
  4. If you are not currently taking dance classes at Bryn Mawr because we do not offer the style or level of technique appropriate to your training, please include a letter of recommendation from your instructor or program director.
