Description
There have been only twelve presidents during Haverford's 176-year history. But before there were presidents, there were principals and superintendents. The concept of "president" emerged after Haverford's charter as a college in 1856, where before it had been a school. The earliest of these men strove to bring a liberal education based on Quaker principles to Quaker boys. Over time, they have had to contend with issues such as war, co-education, financial distress, the honor system, the inclusion of all nationalities, races and religions, and, of course, an evolving curriculum. This exhibition examines the challenges they faced and honors their service with the return of the presidential portraits to Sharpless Gallery.
