An Evening to Celebrate the Conclusion of the Cope Evans Family Papers Digitization Project

Description
On April 22, 2009, Haverford College Quaker & Special Collections will celebrate the conclusion of a six-year project to digitize the Cope Evans Family Papers. The collection contains the letters of the closely related Quaker families of Cope and Evans of Germantown, Pennsylvania, written between 1732-1911. Letters discuss family, friends and home life, reflecting the social environment of these Quaker families. Other topics to be found within the letters include local history, Haverford history, travels in Europe, education, illness and death, health concerns, and discussions of national events such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln and McKinley.
Starting in 2002, Haverford began to digitize the collection as a pilot project for the creation of a Tri-College digital library. The website to present these unique materials was coined Triptych. After years of careful scanning, cataloging, and transcribing, the Cope Evans Family Papers is now the largest collection in Triptych with 2977 digital objects including letters, business papers, albumen prints, and daguerreotypes. The successful completion of the project is due to the hard work of over a dozen Haverford students, three graduate student interns, two digital archives fellows, and the Special Collections librarians.
The event will bring together past and present staff and students who have worked on the project, Cope and Evans family members, and special guest, J. Morris Evans '43, whose long-term and generous support made the project possible.
