Birth Stories - What words would you use to describe childbirth? Did "empowering," "orgasmic," or "joyful" come to mind? Or maybe "painful," "frightening," and "medicalized?" How is birth depicted in Hollywood movies and television shows, and how does that compare with real life stories? How do the structures in place shape the birthing experience, and how do practices vary cross-culturally? How does a society's conceptualization of childbirth relate to women's status? Recent media stories of extraordinary births have evoked interesting ethical and social questions about how we bring forth new life. But how much attention is given to the every day circumstances of this common, yet miraculous phenomenon?
Please join us for a Conversations du Jour faciliated by Mary Welsh '09 and Jessie Blumberg '09, recent participants in a training for childbirth doulas. We'll invite people to share their experiences and thoughts ab! out childbirth as a cultural and political experience.
