December 4, 6:00PM–7:30PM
The Sustainable Investing Seminar is a collaboration between the Center for Peace & Global Citizenship (CPGC) and the Haverford Board Committee on Investments and Social Responsibility (CISR). It is designed to introduce students interested in both finance and social change with an in-depth exposure to the theory and practices of sustainable investment. In this context, sustainable investment is defined as a strategy that 1) acts in the best long-term interests of its beneficiaries, 2) recognizes that environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues can affect the performance of investment portfolios, and 3) better aligns investors with the broader objectives of society.
The seminar will offer five monthly discussions and readings on the topic of sustainable investment starting in December 2008. Leading the discussions are Prof. Jeff Frank of the Haverford Economics Department and Phineas Barnes '98, currently studying for his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Also planned is an on-line trading competition, featuring the On-line Trading and Investment Simulation developed at the Wharton School. The seminar will include occasional outside speakers, and will conclude with students presentations to the Board CISR at its spring meeting.
