Description
On Friday, November 7th at 8 pm, the Department of Music welcomes the Momenta String Quartet and Dalit Warshaw, theramin, on their Music & Conversation series in Roberts Hall, Marshall Auditorium. Their performance will feature the Haydn String Quartet, Op. 33, Ingrid Arauco’s String Quartet No. 2, Dalit Warshaw’s Interludes and Etherludes for string quartet and theremin, and Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor, D. 804, Op. 29 “Rosamunde”. Additionally, there will be a pre-concert demonstration on stage at 7 pm when Ms. Warshaw will give a theramin demonstration. These events free and open to the public.
In addition to its residency at Temple University, the Momenta Quartet has quickly gained a following in New York City after its debut concert at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture in November 2004. Since then, the quartet has been featured in faculty concerts and special programs through a variety of conservatories and colleges, such as the Mannes College of Music, Columbia University Composers, the Brooklyn Conservatory, Kingsborough College and Yeshiva University. In May 2005, Momenta gave a series of concerts sponsored by the League of Composers/ISCM at Symphony Space in Manhattan. The quartet returned there in December for a concert honoring recipients of composition awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Momenta has also recorded new pieces for various composers, including Matthew Greenbaum’s “Castelnau,” recently released as part of a compilation of the composer’s works on the Centaur label (www.centaurrecords.com).
Deeply committed to collaborations with the next generation of composers, the quartet has given at least fifteen premieres in the past three years. As a quartet, Momenta has worked with such established composers as Bario Davidovsky and Martin Bresnick. Individually, its members have collaborated with a wide range of composers, including John Adams, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Ornette Coleman, Henri Dutilleux, Osvaldo Golijov, Butch Morris, Tristan Murail, Tobias Picker and Salvatore Sciarrino, among others.
As it is a part of the quartet’s mission to unite contemporary music with great works of the past, the group takes pride in its more eclectic programming, focusing on new and twentieth-century works but including lesser-known or even older works, such as viol music from the Renaissance.
