"The Island" is a play about South African Apartheid, directed by Anna Russell '14 as her thesis production for a theater major at Swarthmore. It is also one of the two E. Clyde Lutton 1966 Award winning student projects for 2013-14.
Anna Russell '14 will present her thesis production of "The Island" written by Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona, a play about South African Apartheid. Performance will be in the Skate House by the Duck Pond at Haverford College, Friday-Sunday, April 25-27 at 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday April 26.
The production stars Collence Nyazenga '14 and Danoca Harvey '15.
Sponsored by the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities' E. Clyde Lutton 1966 Memorial Fund with additional support from Swarthmore College's Theater Department.
Free and open to the public.
"The Island" is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. which offers the following brief summary: On a small Atlantic island is one of South Africa's maximum security prisons for political prisoners. There, two cell mates, Winston, a lifer, and John, in for ten years, have developed strong bonds of friendship. This bond is about to be broken, for John is soon to be released.
