From Puebla to South Philly: An Immigration Field StudySpring Break 2014: Monday, March 10- Thursday, March 13
This four-day Immigration Field Study, led by Haverford House Fellow Jemma Benson ’13, will focus on the social and economic conditions faced by the Mexican immigrant community in South Philadelphia, a community which has grown from 6,200 in 2000 to approximately 30, 000 today. While in the 1980s and 1990s, Mexican immigrants to the United States were primarily male, agricultural workers, now the community is largely made up of families, most of whom are undocumented. Along with the rise in population of this community, the past decade has seen an outpouring of non-profits and community organizations dedicated to working with this population.
The field study will offer the opportunity to meet with representatives from these organizations, as well as community members themselves, in order to understand the texture of daily life in the community. We will explore issues such as the challenges of primary education for children whose first language is Spanish in the context of the Philadelphia school crisis, opportunities and regulations surrounding healthcare for undocumented immigrants, and how community members work to preserve Mexican culture and identity in the urban landscape of Philadelphia.
