Abstract: Much of mathematics, including all of group theory, consists of the study of symmetries of various objects. But sometimes the right notion of "symmetry" is not the most obvious one. We will discuss examples of symmetry groups from several areas of mathematics, and introduce looser notions of symmetry in contexts of geometry and group theory.
