George Bulman '02, an assistant professor of economics at the University of California at Santa Cruz, will examine the role of college attendance on social mobility in the United States. Recent empirical research has changed the conventional wisdom about which policies are most likely to promote college enrollment among students from low income families. He will discuss the latest findings concerning charter schools, high stakes testing, financial aid, and cultural norms.
David Castro '83, Founder and President of the I-LEAD, Inc., a regional nonprofit school for community leadership development, will offer a view from the field about the practical impact of higher education achievement on wealth creation and improvements to civic engagement, civil society and local quality of life.Through an innovative social enterprise model, I-LEAD forges collaborations between local colleges and community-based organizations that assist low income residents in attaining Associate Degrees.
