A talk by Dr. Carlos Castresana
At 4:30 PM (tea at 4:15) in Sharpless Auditorium, Dr. Castresana will be delivering a public lecture titled "International criminal justice, the construction of democracy and the rule of law."
Dr. Carlos Castresana, a prosecutor at the Spanish Supreme Court was responsible for filing the original complaints before the Spanish National Court in the cases of crimes against humanity perpetrated by Latin American dictators Augusto Pinochet of Chile, and Rafael Videla of Argentina.
In 2007 the UN Secretary General appointed Dr. Castresana Commissioner of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala, a position in which he served until 2010. Castresana's work in Guatemala bears a great deal of responsibility for the impressive reforms of the country's judicial system -- the results of which we are witnessing today as Guatemala becomes the first country to try a former head of state on charges of genocide.
