Founders Hall Common Room
An exhibit by Fine Art students in sculpture and silk screening inspired by Schubert's "Winterreise" that will be performed on Friday, November 30.

Description
Over the summer, Curt Cacioppo was composer-in-residence at the Carmel Bach Festival. There he met the wonderful baritone from Montreal, Alexander Dobson. The two read through Schubert's Winterreise, and decided on the spot that they had to present it in concert on the Performing Artists Series at Haverford College Nov. 30.
The concert is just one facet of what evolved into a campus-wide, semester long integrative learning initiative. With support from the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, some 60 students and 4 professors have joined together in an interdisciplinary journey over the three months. Students in Cacioppo’s chromatic harmony class have done an in-depth analysis of Schubert’s entire work and are composing response pieces to it the cycle, Fine Arts students in sculpture and silk screening are using it as a source of inspiration for visual elaboration, students in German are doing research & film documentaries on the composers’ and artists’ creative activities, and all of these participants are linked together via Moodle chat room and in vivo class visits and social events that have been organized.
The student compositions will be read by Dobson & Cacioppo in the days before the concert, an exhibition of the student art work will go up the week preceding the concert in Founders Common Room, accompanied by a showing of the film shorts that are being made, and a grand Viennese reception with Sachertort & marzipan delicacies will follow the Friday performance.
