October 5, 6:00PM
DC Bryn Mawr Room
Hosted by the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship and the Haverford Microfinance and Impact Investing Initiative.
Description
Traditionally, entrepreneurship has been defined as the establishment of a business enterprise, assuming risk for the sake of profit. More recently, entrepreneurial theory and practice have been applied to address social problems. This symposium is designed to introduce members of the Bi-College community to how entrepreneurship and innovation can be used to effect positive social change. Topics will include:
- What is Social Entrepreneurship?
- Impact Investing
- Standards for Sustainable Enterprises
- Cooperatives and the Solidarity Economy
- Non-Profits and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
To help frame the proceedings, the event will kick off with a keynote talk on the definition of social entrepreneurship. Over dinner, participants will be invited to share their personal experiences and insights on social innovation. The remainder of the evening will be spent in small group discussions with social entrepreneurs/innovators on one of the topics above. The event will conclude with a brief summary and action steps to be implemented throughout the academic year and beyond. The symposium will offer individuals interested in social change the opportunity to explore ideas with innovative thinkers. The goal is for participants to come away with a clearer sense of the broad scope of social entrepreneurship and the role it might play both in their own work and in society at large. The host organizations will use this symposium as a springboard for future events during the 2012-2013 academic year. Speakers and discussion leaders include:
- Michele Leaman, Ashoka: Innovators for the Public
- Mohamed Abdulkader ‘14, Futures Factory
- Ian Gavigan ‘14, B Lab
