Description
Documentary Film as Art and Storytelling: Screening and Panel Discussion
Saturday, October 27, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Stokes Auditorium, Haverford College
Work-in-progress screening of Haverford College senior Carl Sigmond’s forthcoming film, Discovering the Discovery and the Grandfather Who Saved Millions
In his forthcoming film, Discovering the Discovery and the Grandfather Who Saved Millions, Carl Sigmond, a senior and Computer Science Major at Haverford College, takes us on a journey of memory, documenting the life and legacy of his grandfather, Albert Schatz, who discovered streptomycin, the first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis.
Schatz was a 23-year-old graduate student at Rutgers University in 1943 when he made this groundbreaking discovery. Following his discovery, his research advisor stole the credit and won the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for Schatz’s work.
The program will include a showing of the short which inspired the project, Discovering Albert, by Carl Sigmond ’13, Gebhard Keny ’14, and Vanessa Douglas ’12 (Best Coursework Film, 2012 Tri-College Film Festival), selected clips from his forthcoming feature-length film, and a panel discussion. The panelists will discuss the production of this film and the importance of documentary filmmaking and investigative journalism in our society. Sigmond will be joined by:
- Peter Pringle, investigative journalist and author of Experiment Eleven (2012), the first book-length account of Schatz’s discovery of streptomycin.
- Vicky Funari, award-winning documentary filmmaker and Visiting Instructor at Haverford College.
- Zein Nakhoda, Sociology & Anthropology Major and Film & Media Studies Minor at Swarthmore College, who has worked extensively with Sigmond on this project.
