As Haverford’s motto enjoins, the college challenges students to develop mastery and critical understanding within a subject area, to contribute original ideas, to work in depth, and put their learning into action. The senior capstone experience, whether a thesis, art exhibit, or musical composition, is a culmination of research, learning, and a long, thoughtful, and deep engagement with issues.This senior experience has historical precedents in the speeches given by students at commencement beginning in the mid-nineteenth century as well as the studies in Philadelphia welfare institutions done by the class of 1897. The Library presents an exhibit on student research, present and past, exploring its wide range, impact on students’ lives, and connections to the world.
