About the Composers:
Ben Diamond is a senior Music Major at Haverford. He plays drums and percussion, and has performed with the Bi-College Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and with the Swarthmore College Jazz Ensemble. He became interested in composing through music theory courses at Haverford, and currently studies composition with Ingrid Arauco. His senior thesis, composed for jazz quintet, will be premiered in late April.
Ethan Joseph is a senior Music Major at Haverford. He plays violin with the Bi-College Orchestra and is involved in several chamber music groups. This semester he will make his conducting debut with the Bi-College Orchestra performing Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture. His senior thesis focuses on the role of film recordings in the reception history of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies and will be presented in April.
Ben Safran is a sophomore Music Major at Haverford. He plays clarinet in the Swarthmore Wind Ensemble, has sung Tenor in the Haverford/Bryn Mawr Chorale, and is currently studying piano with Matthew Bengtson. His orchestral and choral works have been performed in Boston by the Commonwealth School Orchestra and by the ensemble Calliope.
About the Performers: NETWORK FOR NEW MUSIC has a twenty-five year history of adventurous and innovative programming and virtuoso performances, and this season is no exception. Artistic Director Linda Reichert draws in the very best composers from across the nation and the world, and programs their work with that of the best and most interesting Philadelphia composers. As performed by the brilliant Network for New Music Ensemble (many of whom are also members of The Philadelphia Orchestra), the result is an invigorating and exceptional take on the best of contemporary music, and a window into the future’s standard repertoire. Network's creative programming and spectacular musicianship has attracted world-class guest artists and composers such as Leon Fleisher, Peter Serkin, William Bolcom, Christoph Eschenbach, and many others; and Network often collaborates with artists from the worlds of dance, video, poetry and theater. Through residencies, workshops, and outreach concerts, the ensemble nurtures the gifts and enthusiasm of students who write and play the music of the next generation.
