A talk by Allyn Gaestel '09, freelance journalist in Haiti
This talk will explore the changing discourse and reality in the aftermath of the earthquake in January 2010. Originally activists spoke about "building back better," and Haitians hoped the destruction would offer an opportunity to rebuild a better Haiti. But as the months wore on, people have stayed in tents, the international community has stagnated in providing promised aid, and Haitians have tried to rebuild their lives on their own.
Ms. Gaestel will discuss her perspectives on how national and international politics are affecting reconstruction, and what that means for Haitians in their daily lives.
