On Monday, February 8th at 4:15 PM, the Department of Music presents Robert Gjerdingen, on the topic "18th Century Orphans Learn to Compose Sonatas". This event will be held in MacCrate Recital Hall, Union, and is free and open to the public.
Professor Gjerdingen will speak about his recent work with partimenti, the compositional exercise books used at the Neapolitan conservatories of the 18th century. Come learn how Haydn's teacher taught.
Robert Gjerdingen is the author of numerous books, articles, and reviews in the fields of music theory, music perception, and 18th-century musical style. He was recently awarded the Wallace Berry Award for his book "Music in the Galant Style" (Oxford University Press) at the Society for Music Theory conference in Montreal. The Berry Award is the Society's annual award for the outstanding book published in the preceding year and is the Society's most prestigious prize.
Robert Gjerdingen is Professor of Music Theory and Cognition at Northwestern University. He also serves on the editorial boards of Music Theory Spectrum and the Journal of Music Theory and is the former editor of Music Perception.
