Description
Haverford College's Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery presents the East Coast premiere of Chris Jordan: Running the Numbers, featuring the photographic prints of internationally acclaimed artist Chris Jordan. The show will run January 22 - March 5, 2010, with an opening reception Friday, January 29, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Gallery.
Artist Talk: Thursday, January 28, 7:30 p.m., Sharpless Auditorium in the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center (KINSC). The gallery will be open 11-7:30 p.m. and then 8:30-9:30 p.m. following the Artist Talk.
About the Exhibit:
Exploring the detritus of American mass culture, Jordan's photographs depict staggering statistics through intricately detailed large-scale panels. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: 15 million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (30 seconds of can consumption), 100 million toothpicks (the number of trees cut in the U.S. yearly to make the paper for junk mail), or 38,000 shipping containers (the number of containers processed through American ports every 12 hours).
"Employing themes such as the near versus the far, and the one versus the many, I hope to raise some questions about the roles and responsibilities we each play as individuals in a collective that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming," said Jordan in a 2008 artist’s statement.
Chris Jordan: Running the Numbers has been organized and distributed by the Museum of Art/Washington State University, Pullman, WA.
Overseen by the John B. Hurford '60 Humanities Center and located in Whitehead Campus Center, the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery is open Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 12-5 p.m., and Wednesdays until 8 p.m. For more information, contact Matthew Seamus Callinan, Campus Exhibitions Coordinator, at (610) 896-1287 or mcallina@haverford.edu.
