History of Haverford Photography
Description
Photographs were first acquired for instructional purposes at Haverford College in 1870- thus; it is not surprising that alumni of the college have become photographers of the first rank, making major contributions to the field.
This exhibition charts that history from its beginning with the work of John G. Bullock HC 1874; the Vauxes, George HC 1884,William HC 1893 and their sister Mary, and George’s son George HC 1930; Edwin Rosskam HC 1924, Peter Moore HC 1955, and concluding with the work of Andrew Borowiec HC 1979. The work ranges from the pictorial landscapes and portraits of Bullock to the conceptual and documentary photographs of Peter Moore.
The Haverford College Fine Art Photography Collection and Art Library have acquired examples of their photographs and books, with the Bullock photography and manuscript holdings the most comprehensive of any in a public collection. Loans from public and private collections allow each photographer to be represented by a critical group of their photographs. The exhibition will bring together for the first time an overview of the significant contributions to the field by these Haverfordians. Additionally, the exhibition will also serve to put on record an unexplored part of the history of Philadelphia photography.
